Pretzels 12.10.23
Here’s a bit of trivia for you today:
In 1610, a lowly monk in a mountain monastery in Northern Italy is credited with the creation of the world’s first classic snack.
So as not to waste, the monk took the end of dough left after making bread and twisted them together to resemble a child’s arms folded in prayer. He called his creation, “Pretoria” meaning “little reward” and he gave them to out to the children who did the best job memorizing their prayers.
The Austrians then picked up this habit of rewarding children with this delightful treat and in a slight tweaking of the name, called them – “pretzels.”
So next time you pick up that bag of “Rold Gold” pretzels, you’ll have a greater appreciation of the history.. and for prayer……now that you know the rest of the story.
