Rediscovering Joy – A Daily Rhythm

Today our special guest, George Beers, will share with us how to rediscover joy in the chaotic times we live.

  • What is Joy?

    a. A common view says, Joy = Experience of happiness, great delight.
    b. “Joy has an object and that object is God.” – James Martin
    c. Biblical joy expresses the deep delight we experience in our relationship with God.

    Psalm 35: 9-10a (NIV)

    9 Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord
        and delight in his salvation.
    10 My whole being will exclaim,
        “Who is like you, Lord?

    d. Biblical joy is able to withstand difficult circumstances because connection with God and His love is secure no matter the hardship.

Romans 8:35, 37-39 (ESV)

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  •  A Daily Rhythm

    a. A patter of discovering joy in Psalm 92: 1-3 (ESV)

Psalm 92: 1-4 (ESV)

1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
    to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
2 to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
    and your faithfulness by night,
3 to the music of the lute and the harp,
    to the melody of the lyre.
4 For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work;
    at the works of your hands, I sing for joy.

     b. Declare God’s steadfast love in the morning.
     c. Declare his faithfulness by night.
     d. The movement of recognizing God’s love and his faithfulness provides momentum for joy.
