The Unpardonable Sin 7.31.22
Jerry Beebe

The Bible says there is only one sin that can’t be forgiven. It’s called the “unpardonable” sin and is described in Matthew 12 as  “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.”   What exactly is that?  Well, to begin with, I can assure you that if you are convicted and worried about a sin, you have not committed the “unpardonable” sin.   Those who do have purposely chosen to reject the Gospel, have seared consciences and are not at all concerned about their standing with God.

In my studies, J. Oswald Sanders does the best job in describing this sin.   “These things should be noted:  1) It is a calculated sin, not one of impulse.  2) It is a sin of knowledge, not ignorance, but a sin against spiritual knowledge and light.  3)  It is not an isolated act but a habitual attitude.  4) It is a sin of the heart, not merely of the intellect or the tongue.  5) It is a chosen sin of finality; a complete willful rejection of Christ.”   The harsh term “blasphemy” indicates a deliberate and godless rejection of the saving power and grace of God.

I hope this helps clarify this theological question and I want to assure you again that the capacity to have concern whether you’ve committed this sin is a certain indicator that you have not done so.   If you feel conviction of anything in  your life, I’d encourage you today to follow the pattern of 1 John 1:9 that states; “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
