Songs in Scripture 11.21.21
Jerry Beebe

Paul encourages us in his writings to sing “songs, hymns, and spiritual songs.”  (Eph. 5:19)  The Old Testament, of course, has an entire book of songs that we call the “Psalms.”  What many don’t realize, however, is the New Testament also contains songs that God’s creatures sing in praise of their Maker and Redeemer.   We often overlook them as we read the Scriptures.  No matter what your personal taste in worship music might be, I’d encourage you this week to get out your Bible and read, or perhaps sing, these ancient songs that are recorded in the New Testament letters.  For your information, I have not included the 7 songs that can be found in Revelation.

Doxology to God                                      Romans 11: 33-36

Hymn of Love                                          1 Corinthians 13

Wake-up Song                                         Eph. 5:14

Hymn to Jesus (human and divine)        Philippians 2: 6 – 11

Hymn to Jesus (supreme Lord)              Colossians 1: 15 – 20

Hymn on the life of Jesus                      1 Timothy 3:16

Enjoy exploring these 6 hymns of the ancient church.  We might not know the melody of each one but their words are rich and will help ground us in faith!
